REUNION BY JEFFREY LO (DOWNLOAD PDF HERE)

A hotel room.

DINAH lying in bed, covered only by the bedsheets and the stunned confused look on her face.

The toilet in the bathroom flushes, grabbing DINAH’s attention.

DINAH: Oh my god.

The sink runs.

DINAH: Ohmygodohmygod…

The bathroom door opens.

DINAH: OHMYGOD.

JOSIAH enters from the bathroom, he only wears his underwear.

JOSIAH: Hi.

DINAH: Hi.

JOSIAH: You ok?

DINAH: Yeah.

JOSIAH: I thought I heard something.

DINAH: Oh, no. Nothing. Probably the reception upstairs.

JOSIAH: Ah, is that still going on?

DINAH: Yeah. Probably for another hour or so.

JOSIAH: Do you wanna go back?

DINAH: No. Um. Maybe. Um. I don’t know. I don’t know yet.

JOSIAH: Ok. You sure you’re ok.

DINAH: Yeah.

JOSIAH: I didn’t force you into –

DINAH: No!

JOSIAH: Good.

DINAH: That was definitely a me choice…

JOSIAH: Good.

DINAH: An us choice.

JOSIAH: Good.

DINAH: A… choice

JOSIAH gets under the sheets.

DINAH flinches a little.

JOSIAH: Are you sure you’re ok?

DINAH: Yeah. Sorry. I just… Sorry.

JOSIAH: What?

DINAH: Not used to this.

JOSIAH: Sex?

DINAH: Well – with you.

JOSIAH: I suppose it was our first time.

DINAH: Right.

Beat.

JOSIAH: Are you happy?

DINAH: Um. Yeah…

JOSIAH: Oooh… “Um” – that’s promising.

DINAH: No, that’s not what I mean –

JOSIAH: You’re not used to this.

DINAH: Right.

JOSIAH: Got it. Totally cool.

DINAH: Thank you.

Silence

JOSIAH puts his arm around DINAH.

Beat.

JOSIAH: Crazy…

DINAH: What?

JOSIAH: I was just thinking how crazy it is to see you at here.

DINAH: Right.

JOSIAH: How long has it been?

DINAH: A long time.

JOSIAH: Graduation, probably.

DINAH: Yeah, probably…

JOSIAH: I was just sitting there – watching Marcus read his vows to Lily and then from the corner of my eye… is that? It can’t be… It can’t be Dinah.

DINAH: Here I am… Dinah.

JOSIAH: I haven’t felt that happy in a long time.

DINAH: When?

JOSIAH: When I saw you! When else?

DINAH: When you saw me? I wouldn’t say that’s such a big deal.

JOSIAH: Well it was to me.

DINAH: Why?

JOSIAH: Because –

Pause.

JOSIAH: Because I missed you. I don’t know about you but you meant a lot to me in college.

DINAH: You meant a lot to me too.

JOSIAH: Good.

DINAH: I just… I don’t know.

JOSIAH: What?

DINAH: I guess I’m not used to anyone seeing me as someone special.

JOSIAH: Are you kidding me? Everyone saw you as someone special.

DINAH: Well –

JOSIAH: Friends, teachers – anyone interested in women...

DINAH: Time changes things.

JOSIAH: Time changes…?

DINAH: Life isn’t the same for me anymore.

Silence.

JOSIAH: Of course it’s not.

DINAH: Yeah. Of course not…

Pause.

JOSIAH: Well. Whatever. For me. Today. Now. Still. You are someone special. And seeing you earlier today made me feel the happiest I’ve been in along time.

Pause.

Beat.

Silence.

DINAH: Josiah…

JOSIAH: Yeah?

DINAH: … I’m married.

Silence.

DINAH: Sorr –

JOSIAH: I know.

DINAH: What?

JOSIAH: I know you’re married.

DINAH: You know I’m married.

JOSIAH: Yes.

DINAH: How?

JOSIAH: I asked Frank.

DINAH: Frank?

JOSIAH: Yeah.

DINAH: Frank would not approve of us having –

JOSIAH: Oh absolutely not.

DINAH: But you still wanted to –

JOSIAH: Of course?

DINAH: Even though –

JOSIAH: Frank?

DINAH: No! My marriage.

JOSIAH: Oh. Well… I figured you knew you were married and could make your own decision.

DINAH: … right.

Silence.

JOSIAH: Dinah.

DINAH: Yes?

JOSIAH: Let’s run away.

DINAH: What?

JOSIAH: Let’s be together.

DINAH: Josiah, it’s just been a day –

JOSIAH: It has not just been a day –

DINAH: You know what I mean.

JOSIAH: Fine, I can be around until more days pass.

DINAH: Josiah –

JOSIAH: Do you want to?

DINAH: Do I want to what?

JOSIAH: Leave your marriage. And be with me.

Silence.

JOSIAH: You’re not answering.

DINAH: I know.

JOSIAH: Well….?

Pause.

DINAH gets out of bed and starts putting on her clothes.

JOSIAH: Where are you going?

DINAH: Come on, Let’s go back to the reception.

DINAH grabs her clothes and enters the bathroom.

She closes the bathroom behind her.

JOSIAH sits in bed.

The sink runs.

Lights fade.

END OF PLAY.
