FIND MY iPHONE BY JEFFREY LO (DOWNLOAD PDF HERE)
JAY is at his apartment watching an episode of Black Mirror on Netflix.
It’s a good episode.
A real good one.
After a moment, his phone buzzes.
He checks it.
It’s his mom.
JAY pauses the TV and picks up.
JAY: Hey mom.
MARY GWEN: JAY!
JAY: Yes, mom?
MARY GWEN: I really need your help!
JAY: Is everything ok?
MARY GWEN: You are on speakerphone.
JAY: Ok. Are you ok?
MARY GWEN: Can you hear me? You are on speakerphone.
JAY: Yes, mom. Are you ok? Why am I on speakerphone?
MARY GWEN: Because I cannot hear you so I put you on speakerphone so you can be louder.
JAY: Um, there is just a volume button –
MARY GWEN: Anyway, I really need you to help me.
JAY: Ok. What is wrong?
MARY GWEN: I have a big problem.
JAY: What’s the problem mom?
MARY GWEN: I need you to come here.
JAY: OK, I’ll change my clothes and be right over, but I’m really worried. What is wrong?
MARY GWEN: You cannot help me unless you are here.
JAY: Ok. I will be there. But I am really freaked out right now, mom. Can you please tell me what is going on?
MARY GWEN: Well, anak, I cannot find my phone.
Silence.
JAY: What?
MARY GWEN: I cannot find my phone. I need you to come here and help mama find it, balong.
JAY: Mom.
MARY GWEN: What?
JAY: You don’t need my help finding your phone.
MARY GWEN: Oh, now you don’t want to help your mom?
JAY: I do want to help my mom but you don’t need it.
MARY GWEN: What do you mean I don’t need your help? I am telling you I need it.
JAY: Mom.
MARY GWEN: What?
JAY: Tell me, what is it you are talking to me on?
Pause.
Beat.
Silence.
MARY GWEN hangs up on JAY.
